Firstly, thank you so much for considering or agreeing to be on the show - I truly appreciate you sharing your valuable time with me and our audience. I've outlined some tips to make this go as smoothly as possible and get a result that puts both the guest and the show in the best light. Here goes:
1) What We Will Talk About
Generally speaking, I'll be asking for your thoughts on change in the music business - social, recording and distribution technologies, vanishing arts and skills, new horizons and the old school. Whether you are enthused by the change or lament it, I'm interested in your perspective. "How To Fix The Music Business" is inherently a subject open to a wide range of opinions - please come prepared to share yours.
Whether you speak generally or about a specific aspect of the music business is entirely up to you (and your expertise on the subject matter). Ideally we will frame the discussion via your telling of personal stories, anecdotes and experiences in the music business. Everybody invited onto the show has put in their "10,000 hours" (and more) in their area of expertise; we want to deliver the audience a high level, fluent discussion. Be yourself: salty vocabulary is ok, so long as that's how you normally speak. If you have any current or upcoming projects to promote on the show, let me know so I can ask you about them. I will of course be doing research before we record your episode, but if you can share any current biographical information that will be helpful. Expect some back and forth conversation, be passionate, don't dumb anything down and bring your sense of humor.
2) Scheduling Your Interview
I use Calendly to schedule interviews. Click here to pick a time that works for you:
3) How We'll Record The Interview
I use Skype to conduct all interviews that aren't in person. Hopefully you've already used Skype and have an active account - if you don't, let me know and I'll try to help you get set up. Please provide me with your Skype account name/number prior to the interview as I will be calling you. At the beginning of our interview we'll spend a few minutes making sure everything is working properly. To get the best possible sonic results, use a USB/Skype compatible headset to both listen and speak. Do not listen through computer speakers as your microphone will pick this up and cause undesireable feedback. Please be in a quiet place with no distractions while we are recording our interview. Turn the ringer and any sound notifications off on your mobile phone, and if you're using Skype on your computer, move your mobile phone away from your PC/Mac, as the wireless signal can sometimes cause interferences.
If you're in New York City and would prefer an in-person interview, please let me know and we'll schedule a time to record a chat in person.
4) Interview Length
Typically I try to schedule interviews for 30 minutes in length. If you have a hard stop time, please let me know so we don't have to wrap up abruptly. Of course if we're having a great time and go over a half hour, that's ok too!
The purpose of these interviews is to create and distribute podcasts, blogs, and other written and audio publications. By participating in the interview, you automatically consent for the interview to be broadcast and distributed. If during the interview, you want to say something "off the record", please state this and I will edit this part out. If you wish to clarify or re-address something you stated, please let me know within 7 business days and we can schedule a follow up or I can add your clarification. I do not provide recordings to anyone for approval but I can provide a copy of the unedited recording to interviewees.
